NEWARK, Del. — This ’65 Dodge may not be the newest technology but it is still useful. It is the same with the suburban shopping center in which it is shown parked. 1965, College Square, as it is known, did not exist. In its place was a barn and race track for horses.
About 1970, state Route 72 was moved from Chapel Street to its present alignment, and Delaware Avenue extended to meet it. The horse farm, suddenly on readily accessible real estate, was demolished, and a suburban shopping plaza named College Square was built at the intersection of the new roads. In the late 1980’s, College Square was expanded to its present size.
Today, in 2013, it is almost entirely vacant and two of its three anchor tenants – Sears Hardware and Kmart – are on death watch.
The Automobilist visitied on Black Friday, but everyone seemed to be in other, newer shopping centers. Almost everyone, that is.
